The Nelson County Garden Club

Founded 1935

Each year, the Nelson County Garden Club reviews applications for a scholarship.  The winner is selected from various applicants.

The winner of our $500 Dorothy Bowling Giles Scholarship, Lydia Anne Fitzgerald of Arrington (here with presenter Becky Wilson), will attend Virginia Tech.

The 2015 Nelson County High School graduate said:

“I plan on looking for a career with private or governmental agencies in research and extension for regional management of resources so that I can have a part in ensuring that our agricultural products and practices are safe and sustainable."

Jordan Fitzgerald of Tyro was the 2014 winner of our Dorothy Lee Bowling Giles Scholarship. The graduating senior at Nelson County High School plans to study forestry next year at Dabney Lancaster Community College.

Esther Larkin chaired the selection committee that interviewed candidates and presented the $500 grant at the awards ceremony at Nelson County High School on May 13.  Suiling Weed, Gail Troy and Becky Wilson assisted with interviewing candidates. Dorothy Lee also attended the ceremony.

Of the winner, Esther said, “Jordon was a delight during the interviews. All of the students were wonderful, however, awarding the scholarship to Jordan was unanimous with us. When I told the guidance counselor, Heather Taress, she was very happy about our selection."

Following the ceremony, Jordan came up to Esther and thanked the Garden Club again.  He then to Esther, "Can I give you a hug?’ She, of course, said yes!
